Sean Penn and Susan Sarandon star in the powerful prison drama Dead Man Walking. MGM has done only a passable job on this 1.85:1 non-anamorphic widescreen transfer. Aside of being non-anamorphic, this image often suffers from a darkness in the picture and some excessive grain and dirt. However, most of the colors appear solid and bright with the black levels generally well saturated. A 1.33:1 full frame version is available on side B. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround in English and French. Much like the video presentation, the audio portions of this disc are only mediocre at best. Dead Man Walking is a film that would have benefited greatly from a new Dolby 5.1 remix. Sadly, fans are left with this flat and lifeless soundtrack instead. Also included on this disc are Spanish subtitles. Extra features are limited to a very enticing commentary track by writer/director Tim Robbins, who discusses many aspects on the production of the film, and a single theatrical trailer for the movie.
