Why is the discovery of Neptune still a controversy?
The criticism was soon afterwards made, that both Adams and Le Verrier had been over-optimistic in the precision they claimed for their calculations, and both had, by using Bode's law, greatly overestimated the planet's distance from the sun.
Who accidentally discovered Neptune?
(Courtesy of NASA.) The planet Neptune was discovered in 1846 by German astronomer Johann Galle and his assistant Heinrich Louis d'Arrest.
What was unusual about Neptune's discovery?
Neptune was the first planet to be discovered by using mathematics. After the discovery of Uranus in 1781, astronomers noticed that the planet was being pulled slightly out of its normal orbit.
What is the new discovery about Neptune?
Neptune's true colors aren't deep blue New research published this year rebalanced Neptune's saturation levels and revealed that the planet actually has a pale green-blue wash similar to Uranus. Still, Neptune is a tad bluer. Its teal tones come from methane gas in its hydrogen- and helium-rich atmosphere.
