Nintendo will reduce the price of its low-end DS Lite portable game system to $100 effective Sunday, June 5, the gamemaker said on Tuesday.

Released in 2006, the DS Lite was a much-needed redesign of the original 2004 Nintendo DS hardware. Sporting a sleek, glossy form factor and bright backlit screens, the $130 device was instrumental in making the Nintendo DS line the most successful handheld gaming platform ever released.

Since then, Nintendo has introduced the more powerful DSi and DSi XL hardware, and of course the next-generation 3DS. Nintendo lowered the price of the DSi and XL last year to $150 and $170. Soon after, it announced that 3DS would cost a hefty $250.

Rival Sony's PSP system currently lists for $130; an 8 GB iPod Touch from Apple costs $229.
