Edgar Renteria discusses leaving the Giants

Now Reds shortstop Edgar Renteria played a vital role in the Giants' World Series run last year, hitting a home run in the series clinching game and finishing the postseason with a .286 line. Renteria was coming off a two-year contract, when he earned roughly 9 million dollars annually, to be offered a one year, one million dollar deal for the 2011 season. 

"They’re a great organization. Everybody treated me good. They offered that because they think that’s my value. I thought that wasn’t my value. So we didn’t have an agreement. That’s why I didn’t sign with them. But it’s nothing personal. It’s about business."

Renteria joins a young Reds team where he will compete with Paul Janish for the starting job at shortstop. Given Renteria's experience and playing for winning teams, it should come as no surprise if he sees the bulk of the playing time if he stays healthy. 

He has played alongside Scott Rolen and Miguel Cairo (for what it's worth), and is very familiar with the NL Central ballparks, having spent a bulk of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals. 

The Giants added Miguel Tejada in his place.
