WHAT A VIEW

BEACHFRONT BEAUTY

Across from Stearns Wharf, in view of the mountains and overlooking the Pacific, you’ll find the AAA Four Diamond Harbor View Inn. Originally built in 1943, the hotel’s North Wing combines Spanish Revival architecture with guest rooms and suites featuring modern Spanish Colonial furnishings emphasized by tall ceilings and sun-bleached walnut. Hints of ocean blue and pops of Hermès-inspired tangerine lend visual texture and style to this State Street gem. The signature design is also reflected in the stately bedrooms of the Cabrillo Boulevard buildings. harborviewinnsb.com @harborviewinnsb

History

Santa Barbara’s rich past and diverse lineage live on through historic landmarks, local traditions, museum exhibits, community celebrations and the ongoing efforts of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.

THE CHUMASH INDIAN LEGACY SANTA BARBARA’S ORIGINAL INHABITANTS

The Chumash were the very first people to reside throughout the Santa Barbara South Coast and Channel Islands, dating back an estimated 14,000 years. Kenneth Kahn, tribal chairman for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, illustrates the tribe’s culture, history and legacy:

“Ours is a legacy of perseverance. Our culture, our heritage, our traditions and our Samala language have survived and continue to thrive, thanks to the perseverance of our ancestors and their ability to share their stories and vital information through recordings and documentation for future generations to preserve, absorb and share.

I like to tell people that our people were the first environmentalists. Our people have always had a close bond with the environment. We relish our role as the original stewards of [this land] and will remain environmentally conscious going forward.

Our people have been known for skilled craftsmanship, including fine basketry, hunting and fishing tools and boat-making. Every year, we host Chumash Culture Day on the Santa Ynez Chumash Reservation to invite the public to experience our traditions and rich cultural heritage. We also host the annual Chumash Inter-Tribal Pow-Wow, a two-day event during the first weekend of October, which features Native American tribes from throughout North America. It’s a weekend of dancing, drumming, arts and crafts and food for the community to enjoy.”

JOURNEY BACK IN TIME SANTA BARBARA MILESTONES

The Spanish arrived in Santa Barbara in 1782 and founded El Presidio de Santa Bárbara. The city’s earliest known structure, the Presidio, and the nearby Casa de la Guerra adobe are open to the public under the stewardship of the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation.

Spanish missionaries established Old Mission Santa Barbara on Dec. 4, 1786, Saint Barbara’s feast day. The 10th of California’s chain of 21 missions along El Camino Real, it’s known as the “Queen of the Missions.” Self-guided tours are worth the nominal price of admission to see inside the chapel, the Chumash artifacts housed

in the museum and the cemetery where the remains of the real “Karana” from the novel Island of the Blue Dolphins are buried.

The 1820s ushered in the Mexican era and Rancho period, when Spanish land grants were converted to ownership by Mexican authorities; the names of ranchos, including Dos Pueblos, Goleta and Refugio, live on today. The 1817 Covarrubias Adobe is another notable remnant of the Mexican era—it briefly served as the capital of California during the Mexican War, and is now part of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum

When Stearns Wharf was completed in 1872, the 2,300-foot-long pier was the only deep water port for passenger and freight ships between San Pedro and San Francisco, opening the once isolated city to the world. Today, the 150-year-old landmark is California’s oldest working wooden wharf.

In 1887, Southern Pacific’s first passenger railcar arrival in Santa Barbara marked a major milestone in the city’s history as a tourism destination. Built in 1902, the landmark Santa Barbara Station downtown is the very same place where Amtrak passengers come and go today.

In 1925, a magnitude 8.3 earthquake leveled many parts of downtown and city leaders decided to rebuild the town to reflect its heritage. Perhaps the stateliest example of the city’s signature Spanish Colonial Revival style, the Santa Barbara County Courthouse was completed in 1929. It is considered one of the most beautiful public buildings in the country and remains a working courthouse.

RANDALL PARRISH ART DIRECTOR AT SONOS INC.

In his three years since moving to Santa Barbara from the East Coast, Randall Parish has quickly immersed himself in the local scene—including becoming a member of the S.B. Rollers skating meetup.

What makes Santa Barbara such a special place?

Everything I love about Santa Barbara is because of how opposite it is to where I came from: The people are friendly and relaxed, the town is very walkable and bike-friendly, the scenery is gorgeous and plentiful, but most importantly, it feels like a place where it’s easy to find and become your best self. There’s a community for any interest you may have, and people are always very welcoming.

How do you spend a dream Santa Barbara day?

My favorite day of the week is Sunday, the day of the roller skating meetup with S.B. Rollers! Across from Leadbetter Beach, from 2 p.m. to sundown, catch us jamming out on wheels with a live DJ.

Top three eateries:

Jack’s Bistro for the jalapeño cheddar bagel with chorizo. Institution Ale has a broad selection of beers and seasonal pizzas—if you like your beers dark, this is my favorite place to get an imperial stout. For a luxurious dinner, Loquita, a Spanish restaurant with plenty of exotic, surprising flavors. Easily some of the best seafood I’ve had in this town.

Must-shop destinations:

Xanadu Skate Boutique is the one and only shop in Santa Barbara providing high-quality skates, accessories and apparel. Tell the owner Val I sent ya! Il Fustino is my favorite place in town to buy seasoning and olive oils. Crossroads Trading Co. is the best thrift store in town.

What festival do you most look forward to every year?

The Summer Solstice Celebration is like a multiday Carnival with so many intricate outfits, dancing and live music everywhere throughout the whole weekend—the entire town is buzzing!

JEFF SHELTON ARCHITECT

A Santa Barbara resident for 65 years, Jeff Shelton has made a major mark on the city through his contemporary, whimsical interpretation of Santa Barbara’s classic architectural style.

Why Santa Barbara?

This is perhaps the most beautiful place on Earth, nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, with the greatest weather. I was born here, so this is home.

What’s “quintessential Santa Barbara” to you?

Beautiful fog in the summer, clear skies in the winter.

Go-to restaurants and bars:

We go to Joe’s Café, where we still see a waiter who was there 46 years ago on my second date with my wife. Our family has gone there my whole life. I go to the James Joyce at least once a week, more if I’m lucky. We are blessed with great Mexican food all over town—Lito’s, Super Cucas and El Sitio are all great. Buena Onda has great empanadas. And now that Augie’s opened, I head there for great tequila and food.

Favorite hiking spot:

East Fork Cold Spring Creek, to the water tower.

Local business love:

I like to support the stores and shops that can only be found in Santa Barbara like Oat Bakery, Santa Barbara Company, Seaside Makers, The Book Den, Chaucer’s, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Antique Alley–of course–and Marcel.

Raising a glass to award-winning wines

Home to more than 275 wineries, Santa Barbara County winemakers are known for their innovative, trailblazing approach dating back to the late 1960s, when industry pioneers first started experimenting with pinot noir. Over the decades, growers and winemakers have homed in on what grapes thrive best in the region’s diverse microclimates—from the cool coastal zones of the Sta. Rita Hills stretching inland to the far eastern depths of the Santa Ynez Valley. Today, pinot noir, chardonnay, syrah, sauvignon blanc and cabernet sauvignon are among the top local specialties. Taste them— and dozens more varietals—in urban tasting rooms, among the vineyards or on a guided tour, and discover why leading wine experts have deemed Santa Barbara wine country one of the world’s best and most exciting wine producing regions.

STEP BACK IN TIME

MATTEI’S TAVERN

Originally a stagecoach stop opened in 1886, the landmark Mattei’s Tavern has opened its doors once again in Los Olivos. The reborn Mattei’s Tavern serves up an exciting new dining destination for wine country day-trippers. Four unique food and beverage concepts highlight the bounty of the Central Coast’s land and sea and celebrate local purveyors—in settings steeped in the region’s rich history.

The Tavern features a chef-driven, ranch-inspired menu built around many ingredients harvested from the on-site garden. Helmed by Chef Rhoda Magbitang, The Tavern is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily and you can choose from seating in the elegant, airy dining room or outdoor terrace overlooking the iconic watertower-anchored courtyard. For casual daytime refreshments, Felix Feed & Coffee is your source for freshly baked goods sourced from local favorite, Bob’s Well Bread Bakery, and Santa Barbara’s standout Handlebar Coffee Roasters coffee drinks. The Late Riser’s Toast is already a guest favorite for a more substantial morning bite.

As evening rolls around, soak up the elevated Wild West atmosphere in The Bar, where historically inspired cocktails and local wines pair beautifully with a tailored menu of bites ranging from light to hearty. Last but not least, Gin’s Tap Bar was named for Mattei’s longtime chef, who joined the Tavern in 1910. The menu pays homage to Gin’s Chinese heritage.

Come experience the new chapter of this modern landmark’s long-held tradition of warm, authentic wine country hospitality.
