History

Santa Barbara’s rich past and diverse lineage live on through historic landmarks, local traditions, museum exhibits, community celebrations and the ongoing efforts of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.

THE CHUMASH INDIAN LEGACY SANTA BARBARA’S ORIGINAL INHABITANTS

The Chumash were the very first people to reside throughout the Santa Barbara South Coast and Channel Islands, dating back an estimated 14,000 years. Kenneth Kahn, tribal chairman for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians, illustrates the tribe’s culture, history and legacy:

“Ours is a legacy of perseverance. Our culture, our heritage, our traditions and our Samala language have survived and continue to thrive, thanks to the perseverance of our ancestors and their ability to share their stories and vital information through recordings and documentation for future generations to preserve, absorb and share.

I like to tell people that our people were the first environmentalists. Our people have always had a close bond with the environment. We relish our role as the original stewards of [this land] and will remain environmentally conscious going forward.

Our people have been known for skilled craftsmanship, including fine basketry, hunting and fishing tools and boat-making. Every year, we host Chumash Culture Day on the Santa Ynez Chumash Reservation to invite the public to experience our traditions and rich cultural heritage. We also host the annual Chumash Inter-Tribal Pow-Wow, a two-day event during the first weekend of October, which features Native American tribes from throughout North America. It’s a weekend of dancing, drumming, arts and crafts and food for the community to enjoy.”

JOURNEY BACK IN TIME SANTA BARBARA MILESTONES

The Spanish arrived in Santa Barbara in 1782 and founded El Presidio de Santa Bárbara. The city’s earliest known structure, the Presidio, and the nearby Casa de la Guerra adobe are open to the public under the stewardship of the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation.

Spanish missionaries established Old Mission Santa Barbara on Dec. 4, 1786, Saint Barbara’s feast day. The 10th of California’s chain of 21 missions along El Camino Real, it’s known as the “Queen of the Missions.” Self-guided tours are worth the nominal price of admission to see inside the chapel, the Chumash artifacts housed

in the museum and the cemetery where the remains of the real “Karana” from the novel Island of the Blue Dolphins are buried.

The 1820s ushered in the Mexican era and Rancho period, when Spanish land grants were converted to ownership by Mexican authorities; the names of ranchos, including Dos Pueblos, Goleta and Refugio, live on today. The 1817 Covarrubias Adobe is another notable remnant of the Mexican era—it briefly served as the capital of California during the Mexican War, and is now part of the Santa Barbara Historical Museum

When Stearns Wharf was completed in 1872, the 2,300-foot-long pier was the only deep water port for passenger and freight ships between San Pedro and San Francisco, opening the once isolated city to the world. Today, the 150-year-old landmark is California’s oldest working wooden wharf.

In 1887, Southern Pacific’s first passenger railcar arrival in Santa Barbara marked a major milestone in the city’s history as a tourism destination. Built in 1902, the landmark Santa Barbara Station downtown is the very same place where Amtrak passengers come and go today.

In 1925, a magnitude 8.3 earthquake leveled many parts of downtown and city leaders decided to rebuild the town to reflect its heritage. Perhaps the stateliest example of the city’s signature Spanish Colonial Revival style, the Santa Barbara County Courthouse was completed in 1929. It is considered one of the most beautiful public buildings in the country and remains a working courthouse.

The 3.4-mile out and back loop climbs to an 1,800-foot vantage point delivering sweeping views of Goleta, Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands. How do you spend a dream Santa Barbara day?

Renting BCycle bikes, cruising down to the beachfront and hitting the Funk Zone for wine tasting. Then heading up to Santa Barbara Public Market for awesome eats at either Wabi Sabi or Corazón Cocina, and maybe a sweet finish with Rori’s Artisanal Creamery. If the night is super clear, biking back down to the harbor and watching the moon rise on the dock.

Top three go-to restaurants/bars/eateries: Alessa Pâtisserie & Café for brunch-y pastries and to-go desserts, Caruso’s for a fancy and romantic experience and Flor de Maíz for great tequila cocktails and food.

Favorite hiking spot: Inspiration Point for sure and Tucker’s Grove to forage for hidden herbs and wild foliage.

How/where do you recharge locally?

The Crafter’s Library is a creative outlet for kids and adults. Visiting Paradise Found and our own Pura Luna Apothecary for deep rooting energy towards restoration. The beach is always a place to ground down and recharge—Butterfly is our favorite.

What cultural event do you most look forward to every year?

Without a doubt, the Juneteenth festival put on by Healing Justice Santa Barbara is absolutely not to be missed.

What makes Santa Barbara such a special place?

Everything I love about Santa Barbara is because of how opposite it is to where I came from: The people are friendly and relaxed, the town is very walkable and bike-friendly, the scenery is gorgeous and plentiful, but most importantly, it feels like a place where it’s easy to find and become your best self. There’s a community for any interest you may have, and people are always very welcoming.

How do you spend a dream Santa Barbara day?

My favorite day of the week is Sunday, the day of the roller skating meetup with S.B. Rollers! Across from Leadbetter Beach, from 2 p.m. to sundown, catch us jamming out on wheels with a live DJ.

Top three eateries:

Jack’s Bistro for the jalapeño cheddar bagel with chorizo. Institution Ale has a broad selection of beers and seasonal pizzas—if you like your beers dark, this is my favorite place to get an imperial stout. For a luxurious dinner, Loquita, a Spanish restaurant with plenty of exotic, surprising flavors. Easily some of the best seafood I’ve had in this town.

Must-shop destinations:

Xanadu Skate Boutique is the one and only shop in Santa Barbara providing high-quality skates, accessories and apparel. Tell the owner Val I sent ya! Il Fustino is my favorite place in town to buy seasoning and olive oils. Crossroads Trading Co. is the best thrift store in town.

What festival do you most look forward to every year?

The Summer Solstice Celebration is like a multiday Carnival with so many intricate outfits, dancing and live music everywhere throughout the whole weekend—the entire town is buzzing!

I go to the James Joyce at least once a week, more if I’m lucky. We are blessed with great Mexican food all over town—Lito’s, Super Cucas and El Sitio are all great. Buena Onda has great empanadas. And now that Augie’s opened, I head there for great tequila and food.

GOLETA BEACH PARK

Open 8 a.m. until sunset, this popular sunbathing beach abuts UCSB and offers reservable areas for group barbecues and picnics. The 1,500-footlong Goleta Pier is popular for fishing, and kayak and standup paddle board rentals are available seasonally.

PUP PARADISE ARROYO BURRO BEACH

Also known as Hendry’s Beach, this county beach is dog-friendly with designated on-leash and off-leash sides.
