Peru awards highest sports honor to boxer Alberto Rossel

Peru's Prime Minister Oscar Valdes presented Peruvian boxer Alberto "Chiquito" Rossel with the Sports Laurels, the country’s highest sports award, for winning the WBA light-flyweight title on Saturday, April 14th. During the ceremony, held at the Government Palace in Lima, the premier also gave the world champion a 50,000-sol check, granted by the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD), as a reward for his sporting achievement.
 
Valdes also bestowed the Sports Merit Medal of the Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD) to Rossel and at the same time highlighted the boxer's sporting career and his remarkable success.
 
"All Peruvians are very happy and we thank you publicly on behalf of our country, because you have really brought prestige to the name of Peru. You are an example for all Peruvians, for many Peruvians who are dedicated to the sports," the premier said.
 
Meanwhile, the boxer Alberto Rossel felt proud and happy to have obtained this achievement for Peru. He also urged his fellow athletes to not pass out on the road to victory and persevere to achieve goals.
 
"Chiquito" Rossel also thanked his coaches and his family, especially his wife, for having supported his tough sports career for 17 years.
 
Education Minister Patricia Salas O'Brien, Congresswoman Cenaida Uribe and IPD President Saul Barrera attended also the event.
